What is Culturally Responsive mean?
“Cultural responsiveness is the ability to learn from and relate respectfully with people of your own culture as well as those from other cultures.”
What does Culturally Responsive Education look like?
When educators take in consideration the cultural differences of their students, teachers become culturally responsive and start teaching in a way that helps the student thrive in the educational system, even with all the hardships that he/ she experiences everyday; not knowing the language or fitting in with a society that doesn't understand their way of life or thinking.
10 TIPS TO BE CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE IN YOUR CLASSROOM
1. Express interest in the ethnic background of your students.
2. Make sure your curriculum is sensitive to other cultures.
3. Create lessons that involve technology; technology is universal.
4. Be sensitive to other languages.
5. Maintain high expectations for student performance.
6. Incorporate methods for self-testing and self-reflecting.
7. Pause after asking a question to a student; give them time to process the information.
8. Create more group work lessons/ activities.
9. Invite parents to be a part of the class.
10. Become a facilitator in your classroom not just the teacher.
Teachers are the bridge that will help alleviate the gap between education and the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse families. Having a culturally responsive school will help the schools in the long run.
Training teachers to be culturally diverse will stop the cultural disconnect that steers students into having academic issues, discipline problems, and social-emotional issues in the school.
