Students sometimes require medications during the school day. This page will answer your questions regarding district medication policy.
1) If necessary, can my child receive medication in school?
Students may receive medications in school upon receipt of the appropriate documentation ( Authorization for Administration of Medication in School) authorizing the health office to administer the medication. Information required includes the physician's written order stating student name; name, dosage, route (method) and frequency of medication; date written, and physician name, title, signature and phone number, as well as parent/guardian signature authorizing the administration of the medication.
2) Is my child allowed to carry cough drops, Tylenol, or other non-prescription, over-the-counter medication to school?
No. All medications, both prescription and non-prescription/over-the counter (such as Halls, Ludens, Vicks, Tylenol, Advil, etc.) must be kept in the Health Office and can only be administered by the nurse when the appropriate written documentation has been received and placed on file. 3) May I send the medication in to school with my child?
No. For the health and safety of all students, district policy and New York State guidelines requires that all medication be brought to the school health office by the parent or guardian. Students may NOT carry the medication to school.
4) My child takes his/her medication at home and at school. May I bring in the medication for school in a bottle with just my child's name?
No. All medication kept in school must be brought to school in the original container with a pharmacy label. Information on the label must be identical to the written order received from the physician. If an additional prescription bottle is needed, most pharmacists will provide an additional, labeled bottle upon request. For non-prescription (over-the-counter) medications, the medication must also be in the original container and the child's name affixed to the bottle.
5) What if my child's condition demands that they carry their medication with them?
In certain situations, a physician may request a student to carry his/her medication with them. The health office will review each request on an individual basis and take into consideration the following:
- Severity of medical condition
- Student has been instructed in the procedure for self-administration and can assume responsibility for carrying properly labeled medication in original container
- School nurse has assessed that the student is self-directed (knows name of medication, what it looks like, how much to take, when to take and what happens if dose is missed) to carry and self-administer the medication
- Receipt of appropriate documentation ( Authorization For Self-Administration of Medication) which has been completed and signed by both parent/guardian and prescribing physician
If it is dertermined by the health office that the student is using the medication inapproprialtely or is irresponsible, the privlege to carry medication may be rescinded.
